If you are starting your career as an electrician right from scratch, you will need to enrol yourself onto an apprenticeship program in Electrical Installation. Following are the requirements for a typical Electrical Installation apprenticeship program:
- Grade C or above in GCE’S including Mathematics, English and one Science subject
- A good knowledge of Electrically operated equipment
- Excellent drawing skills and ability to understand technical drawings
- Strong communication skills
- Great attention to detail
- Good teamworking and problem solving skills
Apprenticeship program in Electrical Installation usually lasts for about 3-4 years and involves both theoretical and practical aspects. Upon completing the apprenticeship successfully, you will be awarded NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) Level 3.
One core person requirement for becoming an electrician is a persistent attitude and a practical approach toward life. In order to qualify as a good electrician, you ought to be a very pragmatic person living an active lifestyle as you will be required to do a lot of physical work for long hours. Also, you should be able to understand complex set of instructions both written and oral. Last but not least, you should be physically fit and mentally strong and be able to withstand stress as you will be working long hours usually 37-40 per week, and in some cases weekends too.
If you are planning to become self-employed by working as a free lance electrician you must ensure that you possess at least two years work experience and a number of qualifications that are recognized by City & Guilds.
